CAF overturns Senegal win as Morocco crowned AFCON champions after chaotic final

The Confederation of African Football has officially declared Morocco winners of the Africa Cup of Nations after overturning Senegal’s victory in a dramatic and controversial final.

According to CAF’s appeals board, Senegal forfeited the match after players left the pitch in protest during stoppage time. As a result, their 1-0 extra-time win has been converted into a 3-0 default victory for Morocco.

The January 18 final in Rabat was marked by tension and chaos. Senegal players, led by coach Pape Thiaw, walked off the field for 15 minutes after Morocco was awarded a late penalty. The decision sparked outrage, with some fans attempting to storm the pitch.

When play resumed, Morocco’s Brahim Díaz missed the penalty, and Senegal went on to score the winning goal in extra time. Earlier, Senegal had also seen a goal disallowed, adding to the controversy.

CAF had initially imposed fines exceeding $1 million and handed bans to players and officials from both sides but did not alter the result. However, citing tournament regulations, the appeals board ruled that Senegal’s actions amounted to forfeiting the match.

The case could still be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport for further appeal.
