Authorities in Cameroon have agreed to release the body of veteran opposition figure Anicet Ekane, nearly three months after his death in military detention.
The 74-year-old died on 1 December, five weeks after being arrested. His remains have been kept under judicial seal at Yaoundé Central Hospital following an order by the military court. After two formal requests by family lawyers, officials are now allowing relatives to retrieve the body and begin funeral arrangements.
Ekane was part of an opposition coalition accused of insurrection after endorsing Issa Tchiroma Bakary in the disputed October presidential election.
Official results declared long-serving President Paul Biya the winner, extending his rule, which began in 1982, by another seven-year term.
The election sparked deadly protests across parts of the country, with tensions remaining high as the family awaits the autopsy report.
