Cape Verde created history by reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time after a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia in their tournament debut.
The result completed a remarkable group-stage campaign in which the tiny island nation also earned impressive results against Spain and Uruguay. Cape Verde now becomes the smallest country ever to qualify for the World Cup knockout rounds and will face defending champions Argentina in Miami on July 3.
Elsewhere, Iran’s hopes of progressing remain uncertain after a 1-1 draw with Egypt left them third in Group G with three consecutive draws. Belgium finished top of the group, while Egypt secured second place, forcing Iran to wait and see if they qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Senegal also made history with a commanding 5-0 victory over Iraq. Pape Gueye scored twice as the Lions of Teranga became the first African nation to score five goals in a single FIFA World Cup match, significantly boosting their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
