Diamond Platnumz criticises Tanzania government support for creative industry and funding gaps

What was meant to be a celebratory unveiling of Wasafi’s newly remodeled studios took a more reflective turn as Diamond Platnumz voiced concerns about the treatment of Tanzania’s creative industry.

Speaking during an interview with presenter Lil Ommy, the award-winning artist expressed disappointment over what he perceives as limited government recognition for the entertainment sector.

“I didn’t think they take us seriously as an industry,” Diamond stated, shifting the tone of the conversation.

The remarks carry weight given his global influence. Over the years, Diamond has played a pivotal role in exporting Tanzanian music and culture to international audiences through sold-out shows and strong streaming performance. However, he suggested that local acknowledgment has not kept pace with the industry’s global impact.

He highlighted what he described as an imbalance in national priorities, noting that while sports receive significant investment, sectors such as music, media, and the broader creative arts continue to receive minimal state support.

Drawing comparisons, Diamond pointed to Rwanda, which has invested heavily in infrastructure like modern arenas to attract global events. He questioned why Tanzania has yet to match similar efforts.

The artist also disclosed frustration over an unfulfilled $500,000 government sponsorship pledge for the Trace Awards, which Tanzania had been set to host. He described the lapse as a missed opportunity to demonstrate meaningful backing for an industry already contributing significantly to the country’s global image.
