Sisi rules out staying beyond 2030

Speaking on Saturday to graduates and state officials in a new city east of Cairo, the 71-year-old leader said the Egyptian constitution would not be amended.

Sisi described his departure at the end of his term as a settled matter, adding that preparations for the transition would include developing a new generation of leaders.

Constitutional changes extended his presidency

Sisi took office in 2014 and was initially subject to a two-term limit, with each term lasting four years. A constitutional amendment approved in a referendum later extended presidential terms to six years and introduced transitional provisions that allowed him to seek another term.

The changes enabled Sisi to remain in power through 2030. However, critics and opposition figures have raised concerns that further amendments could be pursued to keep him in office beyond that date.

Development projects draw criticism over debt

During his 12 years in power, Sisi has overseen major state-led infrastructure and development projects, including the construction of a new administrative capital east of Cairo.

Critics argue that the projects have relied heavily on borrowing and contributed to Egypt’s growing debt burden, while the government has presented its development programme as part of efforts to modernise the country.

Rights groups raise concerns over freedoms

Human rights organisations have accused Sisi’s government of restricting political opposition, civil society and freedom of expression.

The government maintains that its policies are necessary to protect national stability and security. Sisi’s latest announcement sets out his stated intention to leave office in 2030, although the political transition remains several years away.
