FIFA Opens Disciplinary Case Against Argentina After World Cup Loss
FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Argentina following incidents involving players and officials after their World Cup final defeat by Spain and during the tournament.
The world football governing body launched the investigation after appointing a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine events surrounding Argentina’s 1-0 defeat at the New York New Jersey Stadium in July. Several Argentina players and members of the coaching staff were reportedly involved in confrontations with Spain players after the final whistle.
Following the prosecutor’s recommendation, FIFA will investigate Argentina defenders Nahuel Molina and midfielder Leandro Paredes over alleged assaults under Article 14 of its Disciplinary Code. Molina faces two separate counts, while Paredes is accused of three.
Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala is also facing an investigation for one alleged assault offence.
Molina could face an additional disciplinary charge for alleged unsporting behaviour. Argentina midfielder Thiago Almada and Spain midfielder Gavi are also accused of the same offence.
FIFA’s disciplinary regulations provide for at least a one-match suspension for unsporting conduct, while players or officials found guilty of assault can receive a minimum three-match suspension.
The investigation could therefore result in significant punishments for those found responsible, although FIFA has not yet announced any final sanctions.
The Argentinian Football Association is also facing separate disciplinary proceedings over alleged breaches committed during several matches at the tournament.
The charges include allegedly using a sporting event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature, team misconduct, discrimination and racist abuse, as well as failing to maintain order and security during matches.
The allegations involving the football association include discriminatory chants and gestures, delayed kick-offs, inappropriate messages displayed by players or supporters and spectators throwing objects.
Another incident under review occurred after Argentina’s semi-final victory over England. Argentina players celebrated the win with a banner supporting their country’s claim to the Falkland Islands.
The banner carried the words “Las Malvinas son Argentinas”, meaning “The Falklands are Argentine”, reflecting the long-running territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.
FIFA’s disciplinary proceedings come at a time when football authorities continue to place greater emphasis on player conduct, discrimination and spectator behaviour during major international competitions.
The governing body is expected to review evidence from the matches, including reports and other available material, before deciding whether sanctions should be imposed.
For Argentina, the case could result in suspensions, fines or other disciplinary measures depending on the findings.
The proceedings also highlight the wider responsibilities of national teams and football associations during international tournaments, with FIFA regulations covering not only actions on the pitch but also behaviour by team officials, players and supporters.
Argentina’s football authorities and the individuals involved will now await FIFA’s decisions as the disciplinary process continues.
