Heavy Rains Flood Tripoli, Kill Bank Worker
Heavy rainfall flooded streets across Libya’s capital, Tripoli, on Tuesday, submerging vehicles, inundating buildings and killing a bank employee by electrocution.
Emergency Measures Introduced
Authorities ordered public services to begin urgent floodwater drainage operations, while security forces closed the capital’s ring road. The General Electricity Company also cut power in some districts to reduce the risk of further electrical accidents.
Bank Employee Electrocuted
Jumhouria Bank confirmed that one of its employees died from electrocution while entering the bank’s headquarters. Floodwater had submerged nearby utility boxes, creating a dangerous situation.
Videos shared on social media showed motorists scrambling out of vehicles as rising water flooded their cars. Several buildings in central Tripoli were also affected, including the central hospital, where water entered the corridors.
Heavy Rainfall Warning Issued
The National Meteorological Centre had warned on Monday evening of heavy rainfall across northern Libya, urging residents near wadis and valleys to exercise caution.
Flooding Continues Despite Preparations
Local authorities regularly clear drainage systems and manholes before the rainy season, as sand blown in from the desert often blocks them. However, flooding remains a recurring problem in the capital.
On Tuesday morning, municipal trucks and road maintenance teams worked along major roads, removing mud and debris carried into the city by floodwaters.
