From Rejection to Recognition: Asiama Wins TGMA Best Male Vocal Performance

While Asiama won Best Male Vocal Performance at the 27th Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), most people watching the event did not recognize him. However, for the artiste, the recognition was the peak of years of hard work in music since his younger days.

Born as Emmanuel Asiamah Mensah in Effiduase, Ashanti Region, the passion of singing developed within him in his childhood from performances in church and aacapella groups formed by his older brother. At the age of 12 years, the musician entered the Glo X Factor contest held in 2012, where his talent amazed the judges like Reggie Rockstone, M.I Abaga, and the late Onyeka Onwenu, but he could not win because of his young age.

Despite being disqualified for age, the contestant did not quit but instead improved himself through music in church, performing live and studying Fine Arts at the University of Ghana.

The artiste has worked with several musical bands, such as the Nkyinkyim Band and The Characters live band. Additionally, he performed at various events, including Afrochella and Global Citizen Festival.

In his musical career, he has released a song “Akoma,” which won him the TGMA Best Male Vocal Performance prize. Currently, he is preparing to release his debut EP.
