Fuel Shortages Leave Niamey Drivers Stranded
Fuel shortages are disrupting daily life in Niger’s capital, Niamey, where motorists face long queues at petrol stations and struggle to find gasoline despite assurances that the supply crisis has ended.
Motorists struggle to find fuel
Drivers across Niamey say the shortages are making it increasingly difficult to travel to work and carry out everyday activities. Some residents report spending several days searching for petrol, with no guarantee they will be able to fill their tanks.
The situation has created uncertainty for commuters who depend on private vehicles and other forms of road transport. Long waits at filling stations are adding to the frustration, while the continued scarcity of fuel is affecting people’s ability to maintain their normal routines.
Harouna Chérif, a resident of Niamey, said he and others had struggled to find fuel for a week.
“The problem is the fuel. For a week now we’ve been struggling, we can’t even find fuel to get to work,” he said.
Chérif expressed frustration over the situation, saying residents did not understand the reasons behind the repeated supply problems. He urged the government to investigate the shortages and find a lasting solution.
Residents question assurances
The shortages have continued despite reports that the crisis had been resolved. Residents say the assurances have not matched their experiences at petrol stations, where supplies remain difficult to obtain.
Abdoulaye Zakari, another Niamey resident, said motorists had been searching for fuel for an extended period without seeing a significant improvement.
“We’ve been looking for fuel for quite some time now, but things are not going well,” he said.
Zakari added that residents had been told the shortage was over, but they were still struggling to find petrol. He called on the country’s leaders to pay attention to the difficulties motorists are facing.
The continued scarcity has fuelled dissatisfaction among residents, who want authorities to provide clearer information about the situation and explain when reliable supplies will return.
Cause of shortage remains unclear
The cause of the fuel shortages has not been established, and there is no confirmed timeline for when supplies will fully return to normal.
The uncertainty has left drivers unsure when they will be able to refuel without spending hours waiting or travelling between stations in search of available petrol.
For workers who rely on daily transport, the shortage threatens to disrupt schedules and make routine journeys more difficult. Residents are therefore calling for measures that would ensure consistent fuel availability and prevent similar disruptions in the future.
Pressure mounts on authorities
The situation in Niamey highlights the impact that fuel shortages can have on households and daily economic activity. When petrol becomes difficult to obtain, commuters face delays, while businesses and workers who depend on road transport may also experience disruption.
Residents are urging the government to investigate the supply problems, communicate clearly about the causes and take steps to stabilise distribution.
Until supplies improve, motorists remain uncertain about when normal conditions will return. For many residents, securing enough fuel to travel to work has become a daily challenge, intensifying calls for a dependable solution.
