Gabon’s Former Prime Minister Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze Detained in Fraud Investigation Over 2008 Cultural Event

Gabon’s former prime minister and prominent opposition leader Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze has been placed in pre-trial detention following his arrest on Wednesday, in a case linked to allegations of fraud and breach of trust connected to a cultural event held in 2008.

According to prosecutors, the investigation relates to his role as one of the organisers of a national cultural festival. A service provider involved in the event claims they were never paid for work completed nearly two decades ago and has filed a formal complaint implicating the former prime minister.

Authorities say the complaint centres on an alleged unpaid sum of around five million CFA francs (approximately $9,000). Prosecutors added that the case is being examined as part of a broader investigation into financial irregularities tied to the event.

Following his arrest, Bilie-By-Nze was placed in pre-trial detention while legal proceedings continue. Officials have not yet confirmed how long he will remain in custody or when he will next appear in court.

The case has triggered strong criticism from his political party, Ensemble pour le Gabon (EPG), which has described the arrest as politically motivated. The party argues that the alleged debt relates to obligations of the Gabonese state at the time and should not be personally attributed to Bilie-By-Nze.

In a statement, the party condemned the arrest as “arbitrary” and “contrary to the principles of the rule of law,” insisting that he was acting in an official capacity during the organisation of the event.

Bilie-By-Nze served as the last prime minister under former President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who was removed from power in a military coup in August 2023. Following the coup, he transitioned into a leading opposition role and became one of the most visible critics of the transitional government.

He later ran in Gabon’s post-coup political process, finishing as runner-up in the most recent election, which was won by junta leader Brice Oligui Nguema.

His detention now adds a new layer of political tension in Gabon, where the post-coup transition has been closely watched by both domestic and international observers.

Supporters argue that the case reflects ongoing political targeting of opposition figures, while authorities maintain that the investigation is strictly focused on financial misconduct linked to past public events.

As proceedings continue, the case is expected to draw significant attention given Bilie-By-Nze’s high-profile political status and his role in Gabon’s recent political transformation.
