Authorities in Germany have arrested four Syrian nationals following a large-scale crackdown on a network involved in smuggling migrants across the English Channel. The arrests were made during coordinated raids in the North Rhine-Westphalia region, where officers seized boats, engines, fuel containers, and safety gear.

The operation was part of a wider international investigation led by the National Crime Agency and Belgian Federal Police, with support from several European partners including Europol and Eurojust.

Investigators discovered that the group was assembling “launch kits” in Germany—packages containing inflatable boats, engines, and other equipment used for illegal Channel crossings. These kits were reportedly transported towards the French coast, where they would be used to carry migrants to the UK.

Authorities believe the network had the capacity to move hundreds of people, with each boat crossing generating large profits for the smugglers. In total, 21 individuals have been arrested across multiple countries as part of the investigation.

More than 450 officers took part in the raids across several German cities, while additional searches were conducted in Belgium. Items recovered include boats, electronic devices, cash, and other materials linked to the smuggling operation.

Officials say the crackdown has significantly disrupted a key supply chain used by trafficking networks. The suspects are expected to face extradition to Belgium, where they could be prosecuted for organised crime and people smuggling offences
