Young Star Remembered for Inspiring Deaf Representation in Hollywood
Kaylee Hottle, the deaf actress best known for playing Jia in Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, has died at the age of 18 following a tragic car accident in Maryland.
According to reports, Hottle was a passenger in a 1995 Honda Accord that crashed in Ijamsville, Maryland, shortly before 3 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21. Authorities believe excessive speed may have contributed to the accident.
She was rushed to a trauma centre after suffering cardiac arrest while being transported to hospital but was later pronounced dead. Two other people in the vehicle survived, with the driver reportedly sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.
Family Confirms Heartbreaking News
Kaylee’s father, Joshua Hottle, who is also deaf, confirmed the news during an emotional livestream in American Sign Language (ASL).
He revealed that he was first informed his daughter had been involved in a serious crash before later learning that her heart had stopped on the way to the hospital. He also shared that he was travelling from Texas to Maryland to bring his daughter home.
The Texas School for the Deaf, where Kaylee was a senior, paid tribute to the young actress, describing her death as a heartbreaking loss.
The school extended its condolences to her family, friends, classmates and everyone whose lives she touched.
A Rising Star and Advocate for Deaf Representation
Born into a multi-generational deaf family, Kaylee Hottle made history as one of the first deaf actors to secure a major role in a Hollywood blockbuster.
She made her film debut in 2021 as Jia, the young girl who communicated with King Kong using American Sign Language. She later reprised the beloved role in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire in 2024.
Her performance was widely praised for bringing authentic deaf representation to the big screen and introducing sign language to millions of viewers worldwide.
Speaking about the role, Kaylee said one of her proudest achievements was showing deaf children that they could see themselves represented in major Hollywood productions.

Following news of her passing, tributes flooded social media from fellow actors, filmmakers and fans.
Godzilla vs. Kong co-star Millie Bobby Brown shared a photo of Kaylee on Instagram, writing that she was devastated by the news and that Kaylee would be deeply missed.
Actress Rebecca Hall, who played Dr. Ilene Andrews in both films, also honoured the young star by sharing behind-the-scenes photos and offering condolences to her family.
