Liverpool begin new era with Sunderland victory but suffer concern over Joe Gomez injury
Liverpool began Andoni Iraola’s reign with a 4-2 victory over Sunderland in their opening friendly of the United States tour, but the win was overshadowed by an early injury to captain Joe Gomez.
Gomez, who started at centre-back and wore the captain’s armband, was forced off after just eight minutes after suffering an injury.
Iraola admitted the defender’s setback was the biggest disappointment of the match, with Liverpool already facing concerns over their options in defence.
“Probably the worst news has been straight away the injury of Joe,” Iraola said. “We were happy because we were going through training without losing any players and unluckily for us we’ve lost Joe straight away.”
Young defenders step up after Gomez setback
Liverpool were already without new signing Jeremy Jacquet, who was rested as he continues his return to full fitness after a long period without playing.
With Virgil van Dijk also unavailable after his World Cup campaign, teenage defenders Mor Talla N’diaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe were called into action.
The 18-year-olds made their debuts and impressed under difficult circumstances, although Liverpool are aware they still need more experienced options at centre-back.
Sporting director Richard Hughes watched from the stands in Nashville, with the injury highlighting the club’s need to strengthen their defensive department.
Szoboszlai and young stars shine in attacking display
Despite the defensive concerns, Liverpool produced an entertaining attacking performance with goals from Kieran Morrison, Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa and Lewis Koumas.
Morrison opened the scoring after cutting inside from the right before producing a composed left-footed finish.
Sunderland responded through Enzo Le Fee and Timur Tutierov, but Szoboszlai restored Liverpool’s momentum with a powerful strike from outside the box to make it 2-2.
The Hungarian midfielder continued his impressive form after ending last season strongly and also took over the captain’s armband after coming on at half-time.
Chiesa and Koumas complete Liverpool victory
Liverpool regained the lead through Federico Chiesa, who scored a brilliant finish after a good pass from Calvin Ramsay.
Lewis Koumas then completed the scoring with a late goal to secure Iraola’s first win as Liverpool manager.
Sixteen-year-old Josh Abe also impressed after making his debut, showing confidence and attacking ability during his second-half appearance.
Iraola demands more improvement
Although Liverpool secured victory, Iraola insisted the result was less important than improving performances during pre-season.
The new manager said his team must continue working hard and avoid becoming comfortable as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Liverpool will continue their US tour against Wrexham in New York, while Sunderland will face Leeds in New Jersey.
