Prince Harry reconsiders UK family visit after police security request is denied
Prince Harry is reportedly reconsidering plans to bring his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to the United Kingdom next month after a request for police protection was rejected.
The Duke of Sussex had been preparing for what would have been the family’s first visit to the UK together in four years. However, those plans have been thrown into uncertainty after his team was informed that no taxpayer-funded police security would be provided during much of their stay.
According to reports, Prince Harry is deeply disappointed by the decision but remains hopeful that an alternative arrangement can be found to allow the visit to proceed safely.
The security request had been submitted to the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC), the body responsible for determining security arrangements for senior members of the Royal Family and other high-profile individuals. Following a security review, the committee decided not to provide police protection outside official royal residences.
During the planned five-day visit, Harry, Meghan and their children were expected to stay as guests of King Charles at one of the royal estates, where police protection would be available. They were also expected to spend time at private accommodation, where security would instead rely on the family’s private protection team travelling from California.
The visit was intended to mark the beginning of the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games, which will be hosted in Birmingham. Prince Harry, who founded the international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick military personnel, was also scheduled to attend several charity engagements in London and the Midlands. Meghan was expected to accompany him at a number of public appearances.
Security has remained one of Prince Harry’s biggest concerns since he stepped back from royal duties and relocated to the United States in 2020. Last year, he lost a legal challenge seeking the restoration of automatic police protection during visits to Britain.
Following that court ruling, Harry expressed concerns about returning to the UK with his family, saying he did not believe it was safe enough without official security. He also spoke publicly of his wish to reconcile with the Royal Family despite ongoing differences.
The planned visit would have carried additional personal significance. King Charles has not seen his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, in person since the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022. Prince Harry last met his father in September during a private visit to Clarence House.
Sources indicate that a final decision on whether Meghan and the children will accompany Prince Harry is expected within the coming days. While the duke remains committed to supporting the Invictus Games and his charitable work in Britain, security considerations are likely to determine whether the family travels together.
The outcome could shape future visits to the UK by Prince Harry and his family as discussions over their security arrangements continue.
