Iran’s New Supreme Leader Vows Revenge After Father’s Death Amid Rising Tensions
Mojtaba Khamenei issues first message since funeral as Iran-US tensions continue to escalate
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has vowed to seek revenge following the death of his father and predecessor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as tensions continue to rise between Tehran and Washington.
In his first public message since funeral ceremonies began, Mojtaba Khamenei described retaliation as the “will of the nation” and pledged that those responsible for his father’s death would face consequences. His statement was delivered through Iranian state television rather than in a public appearance.
Khamenei promises response over father’s killing
Ali Khamenei was killed in an air strike on 28 February, which marked the beginning of the US-Israeli war against Iran. His death triggered large funeral ceremonies across Iran, with mourners gathering to honour the former supreme leader.
During the ceremonies, some supporters carried messages demanding revenge against the United States and its allies. Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father as Iran’s supreme leader, said the country would continue to pursue justice for those killed during the conflict.
“We pledge to avenge the blood of the martyred leader and all the martyrs,” his statement said, according to Iranian state media reports.
Trump responds to threats
The comments came after US President Donald Trump warned that any attempt to target him would result in a major response against Iran.
Trump has previously claimed that Iran has considered plans against him, while Tehran has denied accusations of preparing such operations. The exchange of threats has further increased concerns about the stability of the region.
Conflict continues despite ceasefire efforts
The latest tensions follow months of military confrontation between Iran, the United States and Israel.
The conflict began after US and Israeli strikes against Iran, which were followed by Iranian attacks on Israel and US-linked targets in the Gulf region.
Although Iran and the United States later agreed to a ceasefire aimed at opening the door for diplomatic discussions, recent incidents involving commercial vessels and further military exchanges have raised doubts about whether the agreement can hold.
Regional tensions remain high
The situation has also affected international shipping routes, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy passages.
US officials have called on Iran to guarantee the safety of commercial shipping, while Iranian officials have continued to defend their position on regional security issues.
As diplomatic efforts continue, Mojtaba Khamenei’s first major statement as supreme leader signals a firm stance from Iran’s leadership and could shape the next phase of the ongoing crisis.
