Maiduguri rocked by suicide bombings as violence returns to northeastern Nigeria

A series of suicide bomb attacks has shaken Maiduguri, leaving dozens injured and sparking fears of a resurgence in extremist violence after years of relative calm.

The explosions targeted crowded areas, including the city’s main market and a post office vicinity, sending panic through residents. The attacks came shortly after an overnight assault on a nearby military post, raising concerns about renewed activity from armed groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as multiple blasts forced people to flee for safety. Residents quickly stepped in to assist victims, transporting the injured to medical facilities including the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and other hospitals across the city.

Witnesses reported seeing numerous casualties, with many unable to determine the full scale of the tragedy due to the overwhelming situation.

Security forces have since increased patrols and tightened controls across Maiduguri, while authorities continue investigations. The attacks have raised fresh concerns that the fragile peace in the region may be breaking down.
