A man has been arrested after a car struck multiple pedestrians in the city centre of Derby on Saturday evening, leaving several people injured.
According to Derbyshire Constabulary, the incident occurred around 21:30 GMT on Friar Gate and involved a black Suzuki Swift. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene, where a number of victims—some with serious injuries—were treated before being taken to hospital.
Police confirmed that officers stopped a vehicle believed to be involved shortly after the incident. The driver, a man in his 30s, was arrested and remains in custody as investigations continue.
Authorities have reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat, although the incident has caused widespread concern. Friar Gate remains closed between Curzon Street and Ford Street as police carry out their enquiries.
Local witnesses described scenes of panic, with people leaving nearby bars and gathering in shock as news spread. The area, usually busy with nightlife, was left quiet and cordoned off, with debris scattered across the street.
Local leaders, including MP Catherine Atkinson, expressed shock and concern, offering support to those injured and praising emergency responders for their swift action.
Police are urging anyone with information or who may have seen the vehicle prior to the incident to come forward as investigations continue.
