The man, identified as Yaw Boahene, was exiting a Manhattan-bound train when his bag became trapped between the doors, according to investigators cited by ABC7.

He was then dragged backwards, pulled between trains and onto the tracks. New York Police Department officers were called to the scene after a 911 call about the incident at around 6.05pm local time. They found Boahene unconscious and unresponsive on the roadbed of a northbound A train.

Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police said the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner would determine the cause of death, the investigation is ongoing. A witness told ABC7 she was on her way home from school when the incident occurred. People on the platform panicked, she said.

Subway accidents involving passengers are rare, although similar incidents have occurred.

In 2022, a 20-year-old man died after his clothes became caught between the doors of a No. 1 train at Columbus Circle station in Manhattan. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said subway customer accidents increased by 2% in 2025, however, it said ridership grew faster than accidents, resulting in a 4.7% decrease in the 12-month accident rate.
