Gun

Authorities in the United Kingdom have dismantled what has been described as one of the country’s largest illegal gun manufacturing operations, leading to the imprisonment of 12 men.

The operation, uncovered by South Yorkshire Police, was based in Sheffield, where suspects were converting blank-firing pistols into fully functional and dangerous firearms.

Police raids carried out between March and July 2023 across several areas of the city led to the seizure of more than 100 weapons in different stages of modification. Investigators also uncovered a structured network within the group, revealing an organised system behind the production and distribution of illegal firearms.

Detectives warned that such converted weapons have been increasingly linked to gun-related incidents in the region, posing a serious threat to public safety. Officers believe many of the seized firearms could have ended up in the hands of violent criminals if the operation had not been stopped.

At Sheffield Crown Court, multiple members of the group were handed lengthy prison sentences after being convicted of offences including manufacturing and supplying prohibited weapons and ammunition. Some had pleaded guilty earlier, while others were found guilty during trial proceedings.

Law enforcement officials described the case as a major success in tackling organised crime, highlighting the scale of the operation and its potential impact. They emphasised that removing these weapons from circulation has significantly reduced the risk of harm to the public.
