Operations at LaGuardia Airport were suspended after a collision between a passenger aircraft and a ground emergency vehicle caused major disruption late Sunday night.
The aircraft, operated by Air Canada and arriving from Montreal, struck a firefighting vehicle while taxiing on the runway. The plane, a CRJ 900 with about 76 people on board, had slowed significantly before the impact but still suffered notable damage.
Authorities confirmed that the emergency vehicle belonged to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and was responding to a separate incident at the time of the collision.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued an immediate ground stop, halting all incoming and outgoing flights, with delays and cancellations expected to continue.
Emergency response teams were quickly deployed, including police and fire services, while passengers and crew were attended to at the scene. Reports indicate that several people sustained injuries, though the extent has not been fully disclosed.
The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
Authorities have also advised the public to avoid the airport area due to road closures and heavy emergency activity, as disruptions continue to affect travel in and around New York City.
