Protests Mount After Defence Leadership Shake-Up
Ukraine is facing growing internal tensions over the future of its military leadership after President Volodymyr Zelensky’s decision to part ways with Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov triggered protests and calls for further changes.
Supporters of Fedorov have demanded the removal of Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, warning that nationwide protests could begin if their demands are not met by July 24.
Army veteran Dmytro Koziatynsky, one of the organisers of the demonstrations, said protesters would launch an open-ended movement if Syrskyi remains in his position and Fedorov is not appointed as defence minister.
Although no major protests are planned before the deadline, the political pressure has placed Ukraine’s leadership under intense scrutiny as the country continues its war against Russia.
Zelensky Holds Talks Amid Rumours
Over the weekend, President Zelensky held meetings with senior government officials and military leaders as speculation grew over possible changes within Ukraine’s defence structure.
Ukraine’s General Staff moved to deny reports that Syrskyi had already been dismissed or was about to lose his position.
Reports also suggested that Fedorov had rejected an offer to return to another government role, adding further uncertainty to the situation.
Kyrylo Budanov, head of Zelensky’s office, urged Ukrainians to remain calm and acknowledged that the leadership changes had created strong emotions among citizens.
He warned that internal divisions could benefit Russia, which he said was closely watching Ukraine’s political disagreements.
Syrskyi Defends His Leadership
General Syrskyi, who has faced criticism from some Ukrainians who believe the military needs a new direction, responded by defending his record and denying claims of a serious personal conflict with Fedorov.
The 60-year-old commander said he was surprised by suggestions that relations between him and the former defence minister had broken down.
Syrskyi argued that decisions involving military operations, procurement and mobilisation cannot be made based only on public demands or political pressure.
“Real work, not the public drama surrounding it, wins the war,” he said.
He also rejected accusations that he has failed to embrace modern warfare, particularly the growing use of drones.
Syrskyi said Ukraine had already established an unmanned systems force but warned that drones alone could not replace a traditional military structure.
Fedorov Gains Support for Military Reform
Despite Syrskyi’s defence, many younger Ukrainians have expressed support for Fedorov, viewing him as a symbol of military innovation and reform.
Supporters argue that Ukraine needs new ideas and a different approach to counter Russia’s larger military resources.
During his time leading the defence ministry, Fedorov was praised by supporters for pushing technological improvements and modernising Ukraine’s military operations.
Some protesters believe Syrskyi represents an older military approach influenced by Soviet-era thinking and want younger commanders to take greater leadership roles.
Possible Replacements Under Consideration
As speculation continues, several names have emerged as possible replacements if Zelensky decides to make further changes.
Potential candidates include Joint Forces commander Mykhailo Drapaty, Third Army Corps commander Andriy Biletsky, Airborne Assault Forces commander Oleh Apostol and National Guard commander Ihor Obolensky.
The possible replacements are generally younger than Syrskyi, with several seen as representing a new generation of Ukrainian military leadership.
Another possible candidate is Brigadier General Denys Prokopenko, a commander known for his role during the defence of Mariupol in 2022.
Ukraine Awaits Zelensky’s Decision
President Zelensky has said he is still considering what adjustments are needed to strengthen Ukraine’s defence strategy.
With Russia expected to increase attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure later this year, Zelensky has stressed the importance of entering the coming months with a strong and united defence system.
For now, protests have slowed, but Ukraine remains under pressure to resolve its leadership dispute while maintaining focus on the ongoing war.
