Julius Malema Sentenced to 5 Years as SA Celebs Clash Online Over Shocking Court Ruling

South Africa’s political landscape has been shaken following the sentencing of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema, with celebrities and public figures taking to social media to express sharply divided opinions.

Malema was handed a five-year prison sentence on Thursday, April 16, at the KuGompo Magistrate’s Court. The ruling relates to a 2018 incident involving the unlawful discharge of a firearm, which was widely circulated online.

Magistrate Twanet Olivier delivered multiple sentences across different charges. Malema received five years for unlawful possession of a firearm and an additional two years for unlawful possession of ammunition. He was also fined R20,000 for each count of discharging a firearm in public and reckless endangerment, with the option of six months imprisonment.

All sentences will run concurrently, resulting in an effective five-year term.

However, Malema will not be jailed immediately. He has been granted leave to appeal his sentence, allowing him to remain free while the appeal process unfolds. His application to appeal the conviction itself was denied.

For now, he also retains his position as a Member of Parliament. Under South African law, disqualification would only take effect if the sentence is upheld after all appeals have been exhausted.

The ruling has sparked intense debate across the country, particularly on social media, where prominent voices have weighed in.

Poet and activist Ntsiki Mazwai expressed frustration, criticising the influence of close allies around Malema. Meanwhile, author Jackie Phamotse shared a reflective message, urging him to embrace accountability and leadership growth, drawing comparisons with historic African figures.

As reactions continue to pour in, the case has reignited broader conversations around leadership, accountability, and political responsibility in South Africa.
