South African politician Helen Zille staged a dramatic stunt by swimming in a water-filled pothole to draw attention to what she says are years of poor city management in Johannesburg.
The Stunt
Wearing a wetsuit, snorkel, and swimming cap, Zille entered a large, muddy trench in a suburban road. The hole had filled with water after a burst pipe reportedly went unrepaired for years.
She recorded the moment, jokingly describing it as a “snorkel” and questioning whether there were any fish in the water.
City Problems
Johannesburg, often called the “City of Gold,” has faced ongoing issues with infrastructure, including water cuts, electricity outages, and deteriorating roads.
Residents of the city—home to around six million people—have long complained about poor service delivery and repeated failures in maintaining basic infrastructure.
Political Context
Zille, a former mayor of Cape Town and former leader of a major political party, is now running for mayor of Johannesburg.
Her stunt is part of her campaign to highlight governance issues and push for change in the city’s administration.
Aftermath
City officials later confirmed the pothole was caused by a repeatedly failing water pipe and said the issue was fixed shortly after Zille’s public demonstration.
