The treason trial of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu has resumed after a five-month suspension, bringing renewed attention to the country’s political climate.
Lissu remains in custody
Lissu, chairman of the opposition Chadema party, has been in custody since April 2025 after being charged with treason, an offence that carries the death penalty in Tanzania.
Opposition leader accuses prosecutors
Speaking outside the Dar es Salaam courthouse, Lissu accused prosecutors of deliberately delaying the case to keep him in custody. He alleged that authorities were trying to prolong the proceedings.
Appeal cleared way for trial
The trial was suspended in February while prosecutors appealed a ruling that allowed additional evidence to be presented. Tanzania’s Court of Appeal dismissed the challenge last month, allowing proceedings to resume.
Chadema raises democracy concerns
Chadema described the hearing as a major test of Tanzania’s commitment to democracy, the rule of law and political freedoms. The party has accused the government of using the prosecution to suppress opposition voices.
Political tensions remain
The case follows criticism of Tanzania’s handling of protests surrounding last year’s elections. Lissu’s supporters have accused President Samia Suluhu Hassan of returning to tactics associated with former President John Magufuli, an allegation the government denies.
