Trump criticises Zelensky

Trump told reporters outside the White House on Saturday that Zelensky was creating problems by continuing to authorise attacks on Russian oil refineries. He said the Ukrainian leader should stop the strikes and suggested Ukraine needed a president willing to negotiate a deal.

Diesel agreement sparks backlash

The US president confirmed an agreement to temporarily suspend sanctions on Russian diesel exports until 7 April. Under the arrangement, Russia would release an initial 300,000 tonnes of diesel, followed by further shipments, although some deliveries would depend on the condition of Russian refineries.

Zelensky criticised the agreement, warning that the revenue would help Moscow purchase military equipment and continue its war against Ukraine. He also accused Russia of interpreting the deal as permission to continue bombing Ukrainian cities.

Allies raise concerns

European Union foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas also criticised the decision, arguing that easing sanctions would provide Russia with additional funds for its military campaign. She said European foreign ministers intended to approve a new package of sanctions against Moscow.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham also spoke with Zelensky, with Downing Street saying both leaders supported an immediate energy ceasefire and an end to Russian attacks on shipping in the Black Sea.

Energy crisis adds pressure

The agreement comes amid rising global fuel prices linked to the war involving Iran, the United States and Israel, which has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Russia and Ukraine have also intensified attacks on energy infrastructure, adding pressure to fuel supplies.
