Trump Administration Weighs Expanding Refugee Programme for White South Africans

The administration of US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a major expansion of its refugee admissions programme, with a specific focus on white South Africans.

According to reports, the current annual cap of 7,500 refugees for the 2026 fiscal year could be increased by up to 10,000 additional places, potentially more than doubling the intake.

The proposed expansion would significantly boost admissions of South Africans, particularly those of Afrikaner descent, whom Trump has repeatedly claimed are facing persecution and land dispossession.

However, the South African government, along with various Afrikaner groups and civil organisations, has strongly rejected these claims, stating there is no evidence of systematic targeting based on race.

Afrikaners make up a majority within South Africa’s white minority population, which accounts for just over 7% of the country’s total population.

Data from the US shows that around 4,500 South Africans have already been admitted as refugees in the first half of the fiscal year, with only a handful of individuals from other countries included during the same period.

Despite the narrative of persecution, reports indicate that some South Africans who were granted refugee status have since returned home, raising questions about the basis for their initial claims.

The potential policy shift has sparked debate both within the United States and internationally, with critics questioning whether refugee programmes should prioritise specific racial or national groups.

Supporters of the move argue it provides protection to individuals who feel unsafe, while opponents warn it could politicise humanitarian systems designed to assist the most vulnerable globally.

If implemented, the expansion would mark a significant shift in US refugee policy and could further strain diplomatic relations with South Africa.
