A dramatic political shift appears to be underway in Colombia after right-wing political newcomer Abelardo de la Espriella emerged as the apparent winner of the country’s presidential election, according to an initial vote count.
With more than 99% of ballots counted, de la Espriella secured approximately 49.7% of the vote, narrowly ahead of left-wing candidate Iván Cepeda, who received about 48.7%. Although the margin is slim, the result signals a potentially significant change in Colombia’s political direction, particularly regarding security, crime, and relations with the United States.
De la Espriella, a lawyer and businessman with no previous elected political experience, campaigned on promises to take a tougher approach against armed groups, drug cartels, and organized crime. His message resonated with many voters concerned about escalating violence, growing insecurity, and the expansion of illegal armed organizations across the country.
Addressing supporters after the preliminary results were announced, de la Espriella declared that a new chapter was beginning for Colombia. He promised to govern for all citizens regardless of political affiliation and pledged to uphold the country’s constitution while pursuing policies aimed at improving security and economic opportunities.
The candidate, often known by supporters as “El Tigre” (The Tiger), celebrated the result before large crowds gathered in the coastal city of Barranquilla. Supporters waved Colombian flags, wore the national football jersey, and celebrated what they described as a victory for law, order, and change.
The election result also drew attention internationally due to the strong backing de la Espriella received from US President Donald Trump. Trump had openly endorsed the Colombian candidate during the campaign, praising his plans to combat crime, strengthen border security, and crack down on drug trafficking. Following the preliminary result, Trump celebrated the outcome on social media, calling it a major victory.
However, the election remains contentious. Cepeda has not officially conceded defeat and stated that the preliminary count is not yet legally binding. He emphasized that the official verification process must be completed before final results are accepted.
Adding to the tension, Colombian President Gustavo Petro questioned aspects of the vote-counting process and called for an audit of election software. While no evidence of irregularities has been publicly presented, the concerns have fueled debate among supporters of both camps.
Reports of protests and clashes have already emerged in some areas, including the city of Cali, where demonstrators reportedly confronted police following the announcement of the preliminary results. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely amid concerns that political polarization could trigger further unrest.
Security was one of the defining issues of the campaign. Colombia continues to struggle with violence linked to armed groups, drug trafficking networks, and illegal mining operations. De la Espriella has promised to end negotiations with illegal armed organizations and instead launch a stronger military response to restore state authority.
If officially confirmed as president, his victory would mark one of the most significant political shifts in Colombia in recent years and could reshape the country’s domestic and foreign policies. The coming days will now focus on the verification process and whether the preliminary result becomes the official outcome of one of Colombia’s closest presidential elections in modern history.
