Trump says Iran talks may resume soon as US blockade turns back ships
Donald Trump has said that negotiations with Iran could resume “over the next two days,” raising cautious hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough after recent talks failed to produce an agreement.
The first round of discussions, held in Pakistan over the weekend, ended without a deal, with both sides blaming each other for the lack of progress. Despite this, Trump indicated that communication channels remain open, suggesting that further negotiations could take place imminently.
At the same time, tensions remain high in the region following the United States’ decision to impose a naval blockade on Iranian ports. According to US officials, no ships were able to pass through the blockade during its first 24 hours. Authorities also reported that at least six merchant vessels turned back after receiving instructions from American forces.
However, early assessments suggest the blockade’s implementation has not been entirely consistent. Analysts note that US forces may still be adjusting their operational readiness, which could explain variations in enforcement during the initial phase.
Iran has strongly condemned the blockade, describing it as a violation of its sovereignty and warning of potential consequences if the situation escalates further. The move has also drawn criticism from China, whose foreign ministry labelled the action “dangerous and irresponsible,” reflecting growing international concern about the risk of wider conflict.
Meanwhile, diplomatic developments are unfolding elsewhere in the region. The United States confirmed that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to begin direct negotiations following talks in Washington, marking a potentially significant step toward easing tensions along their shared border.
The situation remains fluid, with military, economic, and diplomatic pressures all converging at once. Global markets have already reacted to the uncertainty, particularly in the energy sector, where disruptions linked to the blockade could have far-reaching consequences.
As the world watches closely, the possibility of renewed US-Iran talks offers a glimmer of hope. However, with strong rhetoric from multiple sides and ongoing military activity in the region, the path to de-escalation remains uncertain.
