Donald Trump has said US military involvement in Iran could come to an end within two to three weeks, adding that Washington will withdraw “whether there is a deal or not” once it is confident Tehran cannot develop a nuclear weapon for years.
His comments come as Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran has the “necessary will” to end the war, provided guarantees are in place to prevent further escalation.
Efforts to de-escalate the conflict are also being pushed by China and Pakistan, which have jointly proposed a five-point peace plan calling for an immediate ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, fighting between Israel and Iran continues, with the conflict spreading across the Gulf region. A drone strike triggered a fire at Kuwait’s international airport, while a tanker was hit off the coast of Qatar. Saudi Arabia and Bahrain have also reported attacks.
The war has already claimed thousands of lives, with the majority of casualties reported in Iran and Lebanon, raising concerns about a wider regional escalation.
