The UK has condemned what it described as “reckless threats” from Iran after reports emerged that missiles were fired toward the strategic military base on Diego Garcia.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said the UK would continue to provide defensive support but stressed it would not be drawn into a wider Middle East conflict.

According to reports from US officials, two ballistic missiles were launched toward the joint UK-US base in the Chagos Islands. One missile reportedly failed mid-flight, while the other was intercepted before reaching its target.

The base on Diego Garcia is a key strategic location used for long-range military operations, particularly in the Middle East. While Iran’s missile capabilities have traditionally been believed to fall short of the distance required to reach the island, some analysts suggest newer systems may extend that range.

The UK government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting international shipping routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global energy supplies.

Tensions have escalated amid ongoing conflict in the region, with Donald Trump criticizing allies for not acting quickly enough to secure maritime routes. Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that UK involvement could put British lives at risk.

The situation has also sparked political debate in the UK, with opposition parties calling for parliamentary approval over the use of British bases by US forces.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to convene an emergency Cobra meeting to assess the impact of the conflict, including potential effects on global energy prices.

As tensions continue to rise, the UK has deployed naval assets, including HMS Dragon, to strengthen its defensive posture in the region.
