Mykhailo Fedorov Rejects New Government Role After Dismissal
Ukraine’s former Defence Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, has rejected an offer to remain in President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government, insisting he wants to return to his previous position.
Fedorov said he appreciated the president’s confidence in him but argued that only three positions were critical to directing Ukraine’s war effort: the president, the defence minister and the commander-in-chief.
His comments come days after Zelensky removed him from office, a decision that sparked protests across the country.
Fedorov Rejects Alternative Government Posts
President Zelensky said he had offered Fedorov several senior roles, including deputy prime minister for military innovation.
However, the 35-year-old declined the offer, saying his priority was not holding office but having the authority to directly influence Ukraine’s military strategy and bring the war closer to victory.
Fedorov has since been replaced as defence minister by Yevhenii Khmara, a former senior official in Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU).
Dismissal Sparks Public Protests
Fedorov’s removal prompted widespread demonstrations, with many Ukrainians praising his role in modernising the military and fighting corruption.
Following the backlash, Zelensky dismissed Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, whose relationship with Fedorov had reportedly become increasingly strained.
Despite the leadership change, protesters have vowed to continue demonstrating until Fedorov is reinstated as defence minister.
Former Minister Defends His Record
In a statement, Fedorov said his team had developed a clear strategy after he became defence minister in January.
He said the plan focused on strengthening Ukraine’s air defences, stabilising the front lines and increasing pressure on Russia through strikes targeting its economy.
According to Fedorov, those efforts helped Ukraine regain momentum on the battlefield and created an opportunity to push Russia toward peace through military strength.
Uncertainty Over Future Role
While Zelensky continues to describe military innovation as a key priority, it remains unclear whether discussions with Fedorov will continue.
The president’s office has confirmed that talks are ongoing but has declined to reveal further details.
The dispute has become one of the most significant political challenges facing Zelensky during the ongoing war, with many Ukrainians viewing Fedorov as a central figure in the country’s recent military successes.
