Veteran broadcaster Dermot Murnaghan dies aged 68 after cancer battle

Dermot Murnaghan was a familiar face on television thanks to his long career in broadcasting. The star passed away today following a battle with cancer. The news has made a lot of people in the broadcasting world very sad. Dermot John Murnaghan was born on Boxing Day in 1957. He is a news broadcaster.

He started working as a researcher at Channel 4 and over time he became one of the best in his field. By September 2022 Dermot Murnaghan was a presenter for Sky News. He also worked as a news anchor for CNBC Europe ITN and BBC News. Dermot Murnaghan has presented different news programs since he joined Sky News in 2007. He also hosted the BBC quiz show Eggheads from 2003 to 2014 before Jeremy Vine took over.

The broadcasting veteran, who was 68 years old died peacefully at his home in North London on July 11 2026 after being ill with prostate cancer according to his family. Dermot Murnaghan had announced that he had stage four prostate cancer summer. At the time Dermot Murnaghan said he was responding to treatment and feeling okay. A statement posted on X by his family on Saturday said: “It is with sadness that the family of Dermot Murnaghan announces that he passed away at home in north London earlier this morning, July 11 at the age of 68 after being ill with prostate cancer.

He died peacefully with his family by his side. The family wants to thank the teams who took care of Dermot Murnaghan with such kindness and compassion throughout his illness.” Dermot Murnaghan has had a career and he has broadcast on all the major news channels. He started his news anchor career at ITV in the 90s presenting the Lunchtime News and News at Ten.

Dermot Murnaghan was the ITV presenter who broke the news that Princess Diana had died in 1997. He also hosted BBC Breakfast in the 2000s before moving to Sky News. Since September 2016 Dermot Murnaghan has been the host of Sky News Tonight from Monday to Thursday every week.

Dermot Murnaghan has been married for, over 30 years. He also has children. The news anchor married his wife, Maria Keegan in Camden in 1989. They live together in North London. Have four children together.
