Veteran Nigerian actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, widely celebrated as the “Lion of Lufodo”, has died at the age of 84. His son, Olu Jacobs Jr., confirmed the news on Wednesday in a statement issued on behalf of the family.
The family said it was grateful to God for “a life well lived and fought” as it announced the death of the celebrated actor. Jacobs was born on 11 July 1942 and built a distinguished career spanning six decades.
His professional journey took him from the stages of London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art to British television, international cinema and Nigeria’s emerging film industry.
After graduating from RADA, Jacobs performed on stages associated with the Royal National Theatre. He also appeared in British television productions including The Venturers and Angels. His international film credits included John Irvin’s The Dogs of War, released in 1980.
After returning to Nigeria, Jacobs became an important figure in the development of modern Nollywood. He delivered acclaimed performances in productions including Oganigwe, The Royal Hibiscus Hotel and Isakaba. His contribution to African performing arts was recognised with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2011. Jacobs also won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007.
He received an Industry Merit Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2013. Beyond his screen career, Jacobs became widely regarded as one of the elder statesmen of Nigerian cinema.
He is survived by his wife, legendary actress Joke Silva, his children and grandchild. The family has requested privacy as they mourn his passing.
