Nollywood actor Zuby Michael has sparked a lot of reactions after he told Christians in Jos, Plateau State, that they should leave the city in the wake of a deadly attack. The actor made this comment after a terrorist attack in the Angwan Rukuba area on Sunday, where reports said dozens of people were killed.
He posted on Instagram saying that “Christians should leave Jos,” and he also said he hoped the people behind it would eventually be brought to justice. His comment quickly set off mixed reactions online, and a lot of Nigerians started questioning how practical that advice really is and what it might lead to. Critics said that asking people to leave their family homes isn’t very practical or likely to hold up over time, especially in a state where many residents identify as Christian.
One user, Jerryluck, pushed back on the idea and asked where residents were supposed to go after they’d already built their lives in Jos. He said that, rather than that, communities that are being impacted should get support and practical resources so they can protect themselves. Others said much the same, arguing that what’s needed is firmer government action, not pushing people out. Riyanxeally pointed out that a lot of residents have already built their lives in the city, and asked the authorities to do a better job on safety and how the city is run.
Some people in the comments dismissed the idea right away, saying they weren’t going to leave their home country. Others took the conversation further, saying we should stop getting stuck on religious or ethnic differences and instead put more attention on staying united, holding people responsible, and having stronger leadership.
The discussion brings out the continued worries in Plateau State around security, how things are being run, and how well communities can cope and bounce back.
