The government of Ghana with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and ECOWAS has helped bring 180 Ghanaian nationals safely back from Libya.
The returnees, consisting of 153 males and 27 females reached Ghana on September 24. The returnees included children and infants.
The returnees were welcomed by ECOWAS Resident Representative in Ghana Mohammed Lawan Gana, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the National Disaster Management Organisation.
The returnees were welcomed by officials and the returnees thanked the institutions that helped bring the returnees safely. Gana said the returnees safe arrival was a step for the returnees to rebuild their lives. Gana encouraged the returnees to see the return as a start instead of a setback for the returnees.
Gana urged the returnees to use the support to the returnees and to think about skills training, entrepreneurship and other ways the returnees can earn a living.
The return of the returnees is part of cooperation between Ghana, IOM and ECOWAS to help Ghanaian nationals who are in vulnerable situations abroad to return by choice and to reintegrate.
This initiative also helps promote orderly and regular migration, for the returnees. Authorities and partner organisations are expected to give the returnees the help they need as the returnees start the reintegration process.
The institutions that are involved will keep working to support the returnees transition and wellbeing.
