Sudan’s Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem has rejected a US position that neither the Sudanese Armed Forces nor the Rapid Support Forces represents constitutional authority.
Speaking in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly Salem said Sudan was open to dialogue but would not accept solutions imposed from outside.
“The Sudanese government is open to dialogue but it does not accept interference or externally imposed solutions ” he said. Salem emphasized that Khartoum’s stance is rooted in sovereignty and the protection of Sudan’s territorial integrity.
The US State Department has stated that neither the Sudanese Armed Forces nor the Rapid Support Forces, nor their leaders represent constitutional governance for Sudan.
Salem also spoke about the conflict that began on April 15 2023. He accused actors of funding and supplying weapons to the war. He said the RSF had rebelled against the army and broken the rules of war.
He said Sudan took part in the Jeddah negotiations in May 2023. Those talks produced agreements meant to protect civilians and allow humanitarian aid to reach areas.
The Sudanese government says the RSF has failed to keep those promises.
Salem also brought up the US decision not to issue a visa to Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan for the UN General Assembly. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said he is concerned about that move.
The war, between the army and the RSF has killed tens of thousands and forced millions to flee their homes. It has created one of the world’s humanitarian crises.
