Charles Bediako

An Alabama circuit court has denied a request by Charles Bediako for a preliminary injunction, effectively ending his collegiate eligibility and season with the Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball.

Judge Daniel Pruet ruled that Bediako failed to demonstrate grounds for injunctive relief, bringing to a close his brief return under a temporary restraining order that had allowed him to rejoin the team midseason. The 7-foot center had sought reinstatement despite previously declaring for the NBA Draft in 2023, signing a two-way professional contract, and competing in the NBA G League.

The case drew national attention, with National Collegiate Athletic Association President Charlie Baker welcoming the ruling. Baker stated that the court upheld member-established eligibility rules, arguing that college athletics are intended for student-athletes rather than professionals seeking to return after entering the pro ranks.

Bediako, 23, averaged 10 points and 4.6 rebounds in five games this season. Previously, he spent two seasons at Alabama (2021–23), helping the program reach consecutive NCAA Tournaments before going undrafted and joining the Motor City Cruise in the G League.

Despite the ruling, head coach Nate Oats confirmed Bediako will remain on scholarship and continue pursuing his degree.
