A Russian military aircraft has crashed in Crimea, killing all 29 people on board, according to officials from Russia’s Defence Ministry.

The incident involved an Antonov An-26, which lost contact with air traffic authorities during what was described as a routine flight. The wreckage was later discovered after a search and rescue operation, confirming that there were no survivors among the crew and passengers.

According to reports relayed through Russian state media outlets such as Tass, the aircraft was carrying six crew members and 23 passengers at the time of the crash. Early indications suggest that the plane suffered technical problems before it went down.

Authorities believe the aircraft may have crashed into a cliff, with no signs of external damage detected. This has led officials to rule out the possibility that the aircraft was struck by missiles, drones, or any other external attack. The Defence Ministry emphasized that the cause appears to be mechanical or technical in nature, although a full investigation is expected to confirm the exact circumstances.

The crash occurred in Crimea, a region annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014, and one that has remained at the center of ongoing conflict between the two countries. Communication with the aircraft was reportedly lost at around 18:00 local time (15:00 GMT), after which emergency services were dispatched to locate the missing plane.

The An-26 is a Soviet-designed military transport aircraft produced by the Ukrainian aerospace company Antonov. It has been widely used by Russian and former Soviet forces since the late 1960s, primarily for transporting cargo and personnel over short and medium distances.

Despite its long service history, the aircraft type has been involved in several fatal accidents over the years. In 2020, a similar crash in Kharkiv, Ukraine, claimed the lives of 26 people, many of whom were military cadets. Another accident in 2021 in Russia’s Far East resulted in 28 fatalities, while a further crash in 2022 in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region left one person dead.

The age of the aircraft and its continued use in military operations have raised concerns about safety and maintenance standards, particularly as older Soviet-era planes remain in active service across parts of the region.

Crimea has been a flashpoint in the wider conflict between Russia and Ukraine since the outbreak of full-scale war four years ago. The peninsula has seen repeated military activity, including Ukrainian strikes targeting Russian bases and infrastructure.

Ukrainian forces have carried out multiple operations in Crimea, focusing on weakening Russian military capabilities in the region. The area’s strategic location, bordering the partially Russian-controlled Kherson region, has made it a key battleground in the ongoing war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly called for the return of Crimea as part of any potential ceasefire or peace agreement. However, negotiations remain complex, with competing international proposals and no clear resolution in sight.

In recent discussions, proposals have even suggested that Ukraine might consider relinquishing control of Crimea as part of a broader peace deal, though such ideas remain highly controversial and are strongly opposed by Kyiv.

The latest crash adds to the ongoing instability in the region, highlighting both the risks of military operations and the continued reliance on aging equipment. Investigations into the cause of the crash are expected to continue, with authorities under pressure to determine whether the failure was due to mechanical issues, maintenance problems, or other factors.

As tensions remain high between Russia and Ukraine, incidents like this underline the ongoing dangers faced by military personnel operating in contested and high-risk environments.
