Ndayishimiye confirmed as ruling party candidate for Burundi’s 2027 presidential election
Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye has been named the ruling party’s candidate for the country’s upcoming 2027 presidential election, positioning him for another term in office.
The announcement was made by the CNDD-FDD party, which confirmed its backing for Ndayishimiye to run for a new seven-year mandate. No official election date has yet been announced.
Ndayishimiye, who took power in 2020 following the death of longtime leader Pierre Nkurunziza, welcomed the endorsement and pledged to continue his leadership agenda.
“I thank you for putting your trust in me,” he said, promising to carry on efforts aimed at maintaining peace and national development.
The 57-year-old former general is widely seen as the frontrunner, though critics have already raised concerns about the credibility of the upcoming vote. Opposition voices argue that the election may fall short of international democratic standards.
Burundi, one of the world’s poorest nations, continues to face economic challenges, with critics pointing to shortages of fuel, foreign currency and essential goods.
Human rights organisations, including United Nations bodies and NGOs, have also raised concerns over ongoing rights violations in the country.
Ndayishimiye’s leadership has been marked by a balancing act between reform efforts and maintaining tight political control, following years of instability triggered by the 2015 political crisis.
