US President Donald Trump has said he “wasn’t worried” during the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, as the suspect prepares to appear in court.
Speaking after the incident in Washington DC, Trump downplayed the moment, saying: “I wasn’t worried. I understand life. We live in a crazy world.”
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from California, was arrested after allegedly opening fire near a security checkpoint in the foyer of the venue, while the dinner was taking place a floor below.
Allen is expected to be formally charged at a court hearing in Washington. Authorities say he described himself as a “game developer and teacher,” though investigations into his motive are still ongoing.
During the incident, Secret Service agents quickly evacuated Trump from the room as gunshots were heard, while attendees were forced to take cover amid the confusion.
Despite the security scare, King Charles III is expected to proceed with his scheduled state visit to the United States, with Buckingham Palace confirming only minor adjustments to the itinerary.
The shooting has raised fresh concerns about security at high-profile political events in the US.
