Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe returned home to a hero’s welcome after making history as the first man to run a sub-two-hour marathon in official race conditions. His remarkable feat at the London Marathon has ignited celebrations across the country.
At Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Sawe was greeted by cheering crowds, government officials, and his proud parents, who travelled six hours to witness the emotional moment. His arrival was marked with a ceremonial water cannon salute, alongside performances by dancers and musicians.
The 31-year-old clocked an astonishing 1:59:30, breaking the long-standing two-hour barrier and surpassing the late Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 record. Sawe ran a disciplined race, reaching halfway in 1:00:29 before accelerating to complete the second half in 59:01.
“I am happy about this good day,” Sawe told supporters, expressing surprise at the scale of the reception. His father revealed the achievement fulfilled a long-held dream, praising his son’s determination.
Sawe later met William Ruto, who awarded him 8 million Kenyan shillings and a commemorative number plate bearing his record time. Ruto described the run as a defining moment in human endurance.
Sawe dedicated the achievement to his nation and has already set his sights on future races, confident he can push the limits even further.
