Controversial musician Shebeshxt remains in custody after third failed bail attempt

Controversial Lekompo musician Lehlohonolo Chauke (31), widely known as Shebeshxt, will remain in custody after the Polokwane Magistrates’ Court dismissed his latest bail application, citing lack of new facts.

This marks his third unsuccessful attempt to be released on bail. Chauke has been behind bars for several months following his arrest in November 2025.

The latest application came after a previous bail appeal was also rejected by the Polokwane High Court on January 9, 2026.

Chauke is facing nine criminal charges, including assault, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, malicious damage to property, and attempted murder.

During the most recent bail proceedings, the State opposed his release, arguing that he had allegedly committed additional offences while previously out on bail in separate matters before the Mankweng, Seshego, and Lebowakgomo Magistrates’ Courts.

Senior Public Prosecutor Advocate Kgaogelo Lekoloane told the court that the accused’s conduct showed a pattern of disregard for bail conditions and the law.

The State further argued that the charges fall under a schedule of serious offences, meaning the accused must demonstrate “exceptional circumstances” in order for bail to be granted.

According to the prosecution, Chauke failed to present any new or compelling evidence that would justify a different outcome from his previous bail hearings.

Advocate Lekoloane maintained that all relevant facts had already been fully presented during the initial bail application and that nothing new had been introduced to change the court’s assessment.

The court agreed with the State’s position, ruling that the defence had not provided any fresh evidence or changed circumstances that would warrant reconsideration of bail.

The magistrate concluded that the information before the court remained the same as in earlier proceedings, and therefore there was no legal basis to overturn previous decisions.

As a result, Chauke’s application was dismissed, and he will remain in custody while awaiting further court proceedings.

The case continues to attract public attention due to the musician’s popularity and controversial public image, with supporters and critics closely following developments in the legal process.

Chauke’s ongoing detention adds to a series of legal setbacks as he continues to face serious criminal allegations in multiple jurisdictions.

The matter is expected to return to court as the prosecution proceeds with the case.
