Award-winning Ghanaian Gospel artist Diana Hamilton highlights that because of fewer ways to make money, many international venues will charge higher booking fees for a gospel event. Venues may not have an incoming source of income from alcohol sales during those events.
Diana shared this information after trying to use one of the relationships they have with UK–based Ghanaian gospel singer Emmanuel Smith to make a concert booking at The O2 Arena – one of the most prestigious entertainment venues in the UK, after witnessing Emmanuel Smith‘s performance at that venue before.
Diana‘s management team tried contacting people who work with Emmanuel Smith‘s management team to see if they could get a booking for her concert at The O2 Arena. When they received the booking proposal, however, the proposed booking fee for the event was more than they expected, which concerned her management team.
According to Diana, the price was influenced by the way the venue makes its money – the venue primarily earns its money through alcohol sales on site, and since gospel concerts typically do not bring in those types of revenue, venues typically increase their fees to cover the revenue loss they would have sustained by not selling alcohol at that event.
Regardless of the financial large amount of money that they would have to pay The O2 Arena, Diana and her team decided that they were going to try to continue to find ways to do what they believe in and perform internationally. They chose to look into other venue options that were more in line with their event type and budget instead, allowing for them to continue hosting successful concerts without compromising their values.
