Durban-born model and entrepreneur Neetasha Singh has achieved a major career milestone after walking the red carpet at the 79th Cannes Film Festival in France, one of the world’s most prestigious film and entertainment events.
Held at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes from May 12 to 23, the festival brought together some of the biggest names in global film, fashion and media. Singh attended after receiving invitations from Women in Film and Television Africa, the Cannes Film Festival and Marché du Film.
Describing the experience as unforgettable, Singh said the event provided valuable opportunities to network with influential figures and gain insights into the global entertainment industry.
During her time at Cannes, she attended the premiere of Full Phil, featuring stars including Woody Harrelson, Kristen Stewart, Emma Mackey and Charlotte Le Bon. She also attended the premiere of The Birthday Party, a Palme d’Or contender starring Monica Bellucci.
One of the highlights of the festival for Singh was sharing the red carpet with Bollywood icon Aishwarya Rai and meeting internationally renowned supermodel Coco Rocha.
Singh also used the global platform to showcase African fashion. Her first red-carpet look was designed by Nigerian fashion house Trish O’ Couture, while her second gown was created by South African designer Laryne Jefferies.
Beyond modelling, Singh is known for her work as a businesswoman and advocate for women’s empowerment. She is the founder of Model Camp SA, a programme focused on mentoring and empowering young girls and aspiring models.
Reflecting on her journey from humble beginnings in Phoenix, Durban, Singh said her success serves as proof that determination and self-belief can overcome difficult circumstances. She recalled walking to school as a child and expressed gratitude for the support she received from her community throughout her career.
She encouraged young people to pursue their dreams regardless of their background, saying that life’s challenges do not determine a person’s future or potential.
Singh’s appearance at Cannes marks another significant achievement for South African talent on the global stage and highlights the growing influence of African creatives in international fashion and entertainment circles.
