Fresh hopes for a possible peace agreement between the United States and Iran emerged on Friday after Pakistani mediators reportedly said a deal could be reached within the next 24 hours, even as military tensions continued escalating near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The latest developments come amid renewed instability in the Gulf region following reports that a tanker near the coast of Oman was struck by what maritime authorities described as an “unknown projectile.” The incident has added to growing fears over the safety of commercial shipping routes in one of the world’s most important oil transit corridors.

According to reports, mediators from Pakistan have been actively involved in efforts to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran as both sides continue discussing terms for a possible peace arrangement. Officials involved in the mediation process reportedly believe negotiations are now “closer than ever,” despite ongoing military confrontations in the region.

The proposed agreement is expected to focus heavily on reopening and securing the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow but critical waterway through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas supplies normally pass. Since the conflict escalated earlier this year, disruptions in the strait have caused major concerns for global energy markets and international trade.

Reports suggest the latest diplomatic discussions may involve temporary arrangements linked to shipping access, regional security and Iran’s nuclear programme. However, significant disagreements reportedly remain between both sides regarding the scope of any long-term agreement.

While negotiations continue behind the scenes, violence and military incidents have persisted across the Gulf region. The latest tanker incident near Oman is one of several maritime attacks and confrontations reported in recent months.

British maritime authorities previously reported cases involving commercial ships struck by unknown projectiles or caught in escalating military activity near the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States military has also intensified operations in the region, targeting vessels accused of violating American restrictions on Iranian oil exports. Recent incidents involving tankers carrying international crews, including Indian sailors, have sparked diplomatic protests and international concern over civilian safety.

Meanwhile, both Washington and Tehran have continued exchanging warnings and military actions despite ongoing peace discussions. Donald Trump recently warned that the US would respond forcefully if attacks on American interests continued, while Iranian officials have insisted they will resist pressure linked to sanctions and military blockades.

The fragile situation has placed additional pressure on international mediators trying to prevent a broader regional conflict involving multiple countries across the Middle East.

Global markets continue closely monitoring the situation due to fears that prolonged instability around the Strait of Hormuz could severely impact oil prices, shipping costs and economic stability worldwide.

Despite the violence and uncertainty, diplomats involved in the negotiations remain cautiously optimistic that a temporary breakthrough could still be achieved in the coming days if both sides agree to de-escalation measures and security guarantees.
