Egypt Make World Cup History After Penalty Shootout Victory Over Australia

Egypt reached the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in their history after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw in Dallas, with captain Mohamed Salah leading the Pharaohs to a landmark victory.

The historic triumph marked Egypt’s first-ever win in a World Cup knockout match and secured a place in the last 16, where they will face defending champions Argentina national football team after Argentina’s victory over Cape Verde.

Egypt took the lead in the 13th minute despite Australia dominating the early stages. Midfielder Emam Ashour rose unmarked to power home a cross from Karim Hafez, scoring his second goal of the tournament and helping Egypt surpass their combined World Cup goal tally from the 1934, 1990 and 2018 tournaments.

Australia had opportunities to respond before halftime, with Cristian Volpato striking the crossbar and Aziz Behich missing a golden chance inside the penalty area. The Socceroos continued to press after the break, while Egypt missed an opportunity to double their advantage when Omar Marmoush fired wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

The Australians finally found an equaliser in the 55th minute when Egypt defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently turned Aiden O’Neill’s free-kick into his own net. The own goal was Hany’s second of the tournament, making him only the second player in FIFA World Cup history to score two own goals in a single edition of the competition. It also became the 13th own goal of the tournament, setting a new World Cup record.

Both teams pushed for a winner during the closing stages. Egypt nearly snatched victory in stoppage time when Ramy Rabia met a brilliant cross from Salah with a powerful header, only for Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beach to produce a spectacular save that forced extra time.

Neither side managed to break the deadlock during the additional 30 minutes, sending the contest to a penalty shootout. Australia introduced experienced goalkeeper Mat Ryan specifically for the shootout, but the move failed to produce the desired outcome.

Egypt remained flawless from the spot, with Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia, Mohamed Salah and Hossam Abdelmaguid all converting their penalties. Salah confidently chipped home a Panenka before Abdelmaguid buried the decisive kick to seal a famous victory.

Australia’s hopes faded after Harry Souttar blasted his penalty over the crossbar and teenage defender Lucas Herrington struck the bar, leaving Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil’s successful efforts insufficient to keep the Socceroos alive.

An emotional Salah was seen in tears after the final whistle as Egypt celebrated one of the greatest moments in the nation’s football history. The veteran forward said the squad embraced the occasion without fear and expressed pride in helping Egypt become one of the first two African nations to win a knockout match at the same World Cup, alongside Morocco.

Australia’s elimination extends its wait for a first World Cup knockout victory since an Asian Football Confederation nation last achieved the feat in 2002, while Egypt now turns its attention to a high-profile Round of 16 showdown against Argentina in Atlanta.
