Pope Leo XIV Urges Europe to Protect Migrants During Visit to Lampedusa

Pope Leo XIV has called on European leaders to strengthen efforts to protect and integrate migrants during a visit to the Italian island of Lampedusa, one of the main entry points for people making the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean from Africa.

The Pope’s visit to the migration frontline delivered a powerful message to both European Union leaders and the United States at a time when migration policies have become increasingly restrictive and political debate over immigration continues to intensify.

The visit coincided with the United States marking its 250th Independence Day, highlighting the pontiff’s continued focus on the treatment of migrants. Since becoming the first American-born pope, Leo XIV has repeatedly spoken in support of migrants and has publicly disagreed with immigration policies pursued by the administration of Donald Trump.

His trip also came just weeks after the European Union approved new migration measures allowing wider use of migrant detention and the establishment of deportation centres outside the bloc.

Addressing worshippers gathered on the island, Pope Leo said Europe possesses both the responsibility and the ability to respond effectively to migration through compassion, cooperation and long-term planning.

He urged European governments to move beyond emergency responses by adopting comprehensive strategies that focus on welcoming, protecting, supporting and integrating migrants into society while also working with developing nations to address the root causes of migration.

The Pope stressed that improving economic opportunities and living conditions in countries of origin would reduce the number of people forced to leave their homes in search of safety and a better future.

During the visit, the 70-year-old pontiff began by praying at the unmarked graves of migrants who lost their lives attempting the dangerous Mediterranean crossing. He later stood alone along Lampedusa’s rocky coastline, reflecting on the thousands of lives that have been lost at sea while trying to reach Europe.

In one of the day’s most emotional moments, Pope Leo met a migrant family and walked hand in hand with their children and pregnant mother to the Door of Europe, a monument dedicated to migrants who risk everything in pursuit of hope, safety and opportunity.

Lampedusa has long been at the centre of Europe’s migration crisis because of its location between North Africa and the European mainland. Over the years, the island has received tens of thousands of migrants and refugees while also witnessing numerous deadly shipwrecks in the Mediterranean.

The Pope’s visit reinforces the Catholic Church’s continued call for compassion toward displaced people and highlights the ongoing challenge facing European governments as they seek to balance border security with humanitarian responsibilities.
