Trump to Lead Grand America 250 Celebration in Washington Amid Heatwave and Political Debate

US President Donald Trump is set to headline a massive celebration in Washington, D.C., on Saturday to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, promising what he has described as a “spectacular rally” featuring historic military flyovers and what organisers hope will become the largest fireworks display ever staged.

The event, officially titled Salute to America 250 Celebrations & Fireworks, will take place on the National Mall despite an intense heatwave affecting much of the eastern and central United States. Temperatures are forecast to reach around 38°C (100°F), raising concerns about attendance and public safety.

Military aircraft are scheduled to fly over the nation’s capital every hour from early afternoon until sunset, with President Trump’s newly introduced Air Force One expected to participate in one of the aerial formations.

Trump is expected to deliver a keynote address at approximately 9:45 p.m. local time after the celebrations begin earlier in the evening. The president has joked that he intends to give a “really long speech” despite the extreme temperatures to demonstrate his endurance.

The highlight of the evening will be an ambitious fireworks display featuring approximately 850,000 fireworks launched from 10 locations across Washington, including eight barges positioned along the Potomac River. Organisers say the 40-minute show is intended to break the Guinness World Record for the largest official fireworks display ever held, surpassing the current record established in the Philippines in 2016.

However, the celebrations have sparked political controversy, with critics accusing Trump of turning a national milestone into a political event. Several musical performers reportedly withdrew from the programme shortly after being announced, while Democratic lawmakers have argued that the White House-backed organisation Freedom250 has overshadowed the bipartisan America250 commission established by Congress to coordinate anniversary events.

Among the critics is California Senator Alex Padilla, who accused the president of making the country’s anniversary more about himself than the nation.

Freedom250 has rejected those claims, insisting the event is designed to unite Americans in celebrating the country’s historic milestone and dismissing the criticism as politically motivated.

Weather conditions remain another major concern. The ongoing heatwave has already forced the cancellation of several Independence Day events across multiple states, including the National Park Service’s annual Independence Day Parade in Washington. Celebrations have also been called off in parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Colorado because of dangerous temperatures.

Forecasters have additionally warned that thunderstorms later in the evening could disrupt the outdoor festivities.

Environmental groups have also expressed concern over the potential impact of the massive fireworks display. Internal National Park Service documents reportedly warned that air quality around central Washington could reach “very unhealthy” levels during the event due to smoke produced by the fireworks.

On the eve of the celebrations, President Trump addressed supporters at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, warning that America’s identity faces threats from what he described as domestic radicals, extremists and communist ideas. His remarks reflected Republican messaging ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

Elsewhere across the country, cities are marking the historic anniversary with their own celebrations. In New York City, the famous Times Square Ball will descend eight times to mark midnight across every US time zone before a major fireworks display. Meanwhile, Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was signed 250 years ago, will host a star-studded concert featuring artists including Christina Aguilera and Meek Mill.
