Argentina Stun Egypt with Dramatic Comeback to Reach World Cup Quarter-Finals
Messi Inspires Holders to Incredible 3-2 Victory
Defending champions Argentina produced a remarkable late comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 and book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The South American giants looked destined for a shock exit after Egypt raced into a two-goal lead in Atlanta through goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico. However, a dramatic turnaround in the final minutes saw Argentina score three times to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Cristian Romero sparked the comeback in the 79th minute before captain Lionel Messi levelled the score five minutes later. Then, in stoppage time, Enzo Fernandez headed home the winner to break Egyptian hearts and send Argentina into the last eight.
The victory sets up a quarter-final clash against either Colombia or Switzerland.
Egypt Take Control
The Pharaohs made a dream start and stunned the reigning world champions after just 15 minutes.
Yasser Ibrahim rose highest to meet Marwan Attia’s cross and headed the ball into the bottom corner, sending Egyptian fans into celebration.
Argentina had an immediate chance to equalise when Nicolas Tagliafico was brought down inside the penalty area. However, Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir produced a brilliant save to deny Messi from the spot.
Shobeir continued his impressive display by making several outstanding saves to keep Argentina at bay during the first half.
Zico Doubles Egypt’s Lead
Egypt thought they had scored again shortly before the hour mark, but a goal from Mostafa Zico was ruled out following a VAR review.
The striker eventually got his goal midway through the second half, calmly finishing after excellent work from Haissem Hassan to put Egypt 2-0 ahead.
At that stage, Egypt appeared to be on course for one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.
Argentina’s Stunning Fightback
The defending champions finally found a way back into the match when Cristian Romero headed home with just 11 minutes remaining.
The goal gave Argentina renewed belief and five minutes later Messi delivered once again, firing into the net via the underside of the crossbar to make it 2-2.
The dramatic equaliser set up a frantic finish, with both teams pushing for a winner.
Moments before Argentina’s decisive goal, Egypt felt they should have been awarded a penalty after Mohamed Salah went down in the box following contact from Julian Alvarez. However, referee François Letexier waved play on.
Argentina quickly launched a counter-attack and Lautaro Martinez delivered a cross for Enzo Fernandez, who headed home in stoppage time to complete an extraordinary comeback.
Messi Makes More History
Despite missing a first-half penalty, Messi once again proved decisive for Argentina.
The Inter Miami star scored his 21st World Cup goal and continued his remarkable scoring run at the tournament.
At 39, Messi remains one of the standout performers of the competition and was visibly emotional after the final whistle as Argentina kept their hopes of retaining the World Cup alive.
Egypt Exit with Pride
Although the defeat will be painful, Egypt leave the tournament with plenty of positives.
The Pharaohs secured their first-ever World Cup victory earlier in the tournament and came within minutes of eliminating the defending champions.
Their courageous performance against Argentina earned admiration around the football world, even if their dream run ended in heartbreaking fashion.
