Rabat Calls for Full Investigation After Man Dies in Police Restraint
Morocco has called on Italian authorities to provide answers over the death of a Moroccan national during an arrest in Bologna, an incident that sparked protests across the Italian city.
Abderrahim Fakir, 42, died after being restrained by police officers, prompting Morocco’s government to demand a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Morocco Calls for Accountability
Morocco’s foreign ministry said it was following the case “very closely” and “with concern”, urging Italian authorities to establish responsibility and ensure that all necessary legal procedures are followed.
The ministry called for “full light” to be shed on the incident and said those responsible should face appropriate legal action if wrongdoing is established.
Police Restraint Incident Under Investigation
Italian prosecutors opened an investigation into Fakir’s death on Monday.
According to reports, Fakir died after being held face-down on the ground by police officers for several minutes.
A video recorded by a resident shows Fakir calling for help while two officers restrain him, with emergency responders present at the scene.
The two police officers and four medical responders who were involved are currently under investigation.
Death Sparks Bologna Protests
Fakir’s death led to major demonstrations in Bologna, with thousands of people taking part in a protest demanding justice.
The largely peaceful demonstration later saw clashes between a group of protesters and police.
Authorities said 64 police officers were injured during the unrest, while Italian media reported that several protesters were also hurt.
Meloni Calls for Truth
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the circumstances surrounding Fakir’s death must be investigated thoroughly.
“The truth must be pursued without prejudice or leniency for anyone,” Meloni said, while also condemning the violence that followed the protests.
She said the investigation should determine what happened and ensure accountability where necessary.
Community Seeks Justice
Fakir had reportedly moved to Italy when he was five years old and had lived in the country for decades.
His death has raised renewed discussions in Italy about police conduct, the use of force and accountability during arrests.
Morocco’s intervention has added international attention to the case as Italian authorities continue their investigation.
